Anonymous SMTP will be disabled April 15th

Important Notice: On April 15th, the e-mail system "mail.uidaho.edu" will be configured to not allow anonymous SMTP e-mail.  All connections to the system must provide account credentials and must be set to use encrypted communication.

Will this affect my e-mail client?
If you have setup your e-mail client using the instructions at http://support.uidaho.edu/faq/ you should not be affected by this change.  However, you may wish to review the settings to confirm.  You may also contact the ITS Help Desk, by phone at 208-885-HELP (4357), for assistance in determining if your client will be affected.

How will this affect my e-mail on April 15th, if I do not make changes?
If you are using SMTP to send e-mail you will not be able to send messages after April 15th unless you set your client to authenticate.  When sending a message you will receive connection and/or authentication errors depending on your e-mail client software.

Can I change to authenticated SMTP now?
Yes, you may update your client at any time following the instructions at http://support.uidaho.edu/faq/.

Is it difficult to configure my e-mail client to use authentication and encryption?
No.  Although most e-mail clients do not set this up automatically almost all e-mail clients support authenticated SMTP with TLS encryption.  Contact the ITS Help Desk and we can walk you through the steps necessary.

Why should my e-mail communication be encrypted?
ITS is working hard to increase computing security across the University of Idaho. When you are connecting from a wireless access point, from non-UI network computers, or many other locations, you will want to make sure the communication from your computer to the servers is fully encrypted.  The ITS e-mail servers support SSL/TLS (secure sockets layer) encryption with all available e-mail protocols.  This means your username and password will not be sent as plain text across a network and will not be susceptible to network eavesdropping.

Does this encrypt all of my e-mail messages?
No.  This only encrypts the communication between your computer and the server.  E-mail messages are still sent to recipients as plain text messages.

Is there a way to store all of my e-mail on the servers so it can be accessed anywhere using secure protocols?
We recommend using Outlook 2007 with native mode access.  This not only provides full SSL encryption of your network communication but also allows you to use the full Exchange Calendar, Task, Note, Contact, and E-mail functionality.  You can also access all of your e-mail using Outlook Web Access (OWA) through a web browser at https://mail.uidaho.edu/.  The UI servers also support IMAP over SSL (IMAPS).  Unlike POP, IMAP will store all folders and messages on the server which can be accessed anywhere…even with OWA.

Who do I contact for additional information?
Please contact the ITS Help Desk by e-mail at helpdesk@uidaho.edu or by phone at 208-885-HELP (4357).  Our semester hours are Monday-Friday 7am-6pm.
