Mailman Web interface |
| Description: |
ITS will be restarting Apache on server bulkmail.its.uidaho.edu in order to install a new certificate for the Web interface to the mailman lists at www.lists.uidaho.edu.
The service restart is expected to take about 30 seconds.
During the restart, mailman will continue to process messages normally, but the Web interface will not be available to end users. This means that list owners will not be able to approve held messages or make changes to their list settings until the Apache service is fully back online.
Once the certificate is installed and the service is online, the functionality of mailman is not expected to change.

After further investigation, the performance problems experienced by several ITS servers (listed below) and the UI VPN gateway were due to a short duration network DDoS attack against a VPN client IP address. All the affected servers were on the same router interface card. When the DDoS had consumed all the buffers on that gigabit ethernet card, all hosts connected to that card started to experience high levels of packet discards. The duration of the DDoS traffice was 20-30 minutes.
The high level of Multicast traffic that was experienced on the VLANs (listed below) appears to have been unrelated to the heavy packet discards that caused the server performance problems at approximately 4pm.

On Thursday November 11 at 5 pm, ITS will begin applying security patches and other updates to servers hosting the following services.

We will install Novembers Microsoft security updates, the latest version of SNMP Informant Advanced, and the latest version of Epilog.
Exchange users will experience two 90 second outages while we move the Exchange cluster services between physical nodes. Properly configured Email clients will automatically reconnect after the outages.
Blackberry users will experience a brief period of time during which their devices do not synchronize with their Exchange accounts while the Blackberry Enterprise server restarts. This is expected to last less than 5 minutes.
Vandals.uidaho.edu Email will not be impacted, except for a brief period of time when password resets (from support.uidaho.edu) and new accounts will not be synchronized with the Microsoft servers while the MIIS server reboots. This is expected to take less than 5 minutes.
SQL services hosted on msdb2 will also be unavailable for a short time while msdb2 is restarted. This impacts the Virtual Infrastructure Client. This outage is also expected to take less than 5 minutes.
